How to Organize Your Files With Folders

My Documents is a folder where most programs will automatically save documents to. Pictures will be saved to My Pictures folder with image programs. This will end up place a lot of files in one folder. When you want to go back and look for a certain file you’ll have to search through all those files.

Here is a quick way to keep all those files organized. This is a shortcut method that works in all Windows versions. If you click Start > My Documents you will be in the My Documents folder where all your documents should be. Now within this window simply right click on a blank space of the window. Hover the mouse over “New” then click on folder. This will create a new folder inside of “My Documents.” Now you can name this folder what ever you want. My suggestion is to name it exactly what it will hold. For instance if it will contain work documents name it “Work.” Be descriptive because you can make as many subfolders as necessary.

Now that you have folders that you can place documents into you can start to drag and drop files into folders. Simply click and hold the left mouse button on a file and drag it to the proper folder. If you want to select multiple files hold down the control key and click the files you want to drag to a folder. After you have selected several files just click on one that is highlighted and drag it to the proper folder.

After you have organized your files it will be easier to find a file quickly. Just think of this you know the name of the file and where it should be. If it is a work file now you’ll just have to click My Document > Work and then look through some files instead of a long list a files.

Just remember you can do this with all your pictures too. Simply go to My Pictures and create new folders to place pictures in. There are various naming conventions to use with picture. You can start with a folder for a year and then have the month inside and then pictures for each month. You can also create a folder and name it by the place or just by who is in the pictures. It is totally up to you.
